How to Maintain a Fiberglass Pool or Spa in the Las Vegas Desert

Maintaining a fiberglass pool in Las Vegas comes down to one number that most maintenance advice never mentions: calcium. Fiberglass pools are built for water with calcium hardness below 120 ppm. Las Vegas tap water runs between 205 and 428 ppm depending on your zip code. That means a fiberglass pool here starts above the recommended ceiling on the day it is filled, and desert evaporation pushes it higher every week after that.

Everything else about fiberglass maintenance is easier than a plaster pool. This one thing is harder, and it is the reason gelcoat in Las Vegas chalks and discolors years earlier than the same shell would in a milder climate.

Two of those deserve attention before the rest. Chlorine above 5 ppm damages gelcoat directly, which is why aggressive shocking is one of the fastest ways to age a fiberglass surface. And high calcium combined with high pH is the combination that does permanent damage: together they produce chalking and discoloration that does not come back out with cleaning. That is not a stain. It is the finish itself.


Why Las Vegas Is a Harder Place to Own a Fiberglass Pool

The fill water is already over the limit

Las Vegas water is classified as very hard, between 12 and 25 grains per gallon. The national average is 5 to 7. Central Las Vegas runs 16 to 22 grains, Henderson and Green Valley reach 25, Summerlin sits around 14 to 20.

Converted to the units on your test kit, that is 205 to 428 ppm of hardness coming out of the hose, against a target of under 120 for the gelcoat. You are not drifting out of range over time. You are starting out of range.


Evaporation concentrates it, permanently

This is the part that compounds. A Las Vegas pool loses around half an inch of water per day to evaporation, and the Southern Nevada Water Authority puts annual loss at roughly 48.6 gallons per square foot of surface.


Water evaporates. Calcium does not. Every gallon that leaves as vapor leaves its minerals behind in the pool, and every gallon you add from the hose to top it back up brings a fresh load of calcium with it. Nothing removes it. So through a Las Vegas summer, calcium hardness climbs steadily in one direction, and it will keep climbing until someone intervenes.


That intervention is the single most important maintenance decision a fiberglass pool owner makes here, and it is either a partial water replacement on a schedule or a chelating or sequestering product that keeps the calcium in solution instead of letting it deposit on the finish. Which one makes sense depends on your pool, your fill rate and the time of year.


UV does the rest

Standard gelcoat breaks down under ultraviolet exposure, and Las Vegas delivers more of it than almost anywhere in the country. UV is what turns a deep blue finish chalky and pale, and it is also a contributing cause of spider cracking, the web-like surface fractures that show up first on steps and corners.


You cannot stop UV. You can slow what it does by keeping the water chemistry inside range, because a surface already stressed by high pH or high chlorine degrades under sun far faster than one that is not.


The Routine That Actually Protects the Finish

Weekly

  • Test pH, free chlorine and total alkalinity. In summer, twice a week is better, because evaporation moves these numbers faster than most owners expect.

  • Brush the waterline and the steps with a nylon brush. Never a wire brush or a stiff bristle brush.

  • Skim and empty baskets. Organic debris left sitting is a source of staining on gelcoat.


Monthly

  • Test calcium hardness. This is the one most people skip and it is the one that matters most in Las Vegas.

  • Test cyanuric acid. It only goes up, and once it passes 100 ppm your chlorine stops doing its job no matter how much you add.

  • Look at the waterline in daylight for the early signs listed below.


Seasonally

  • Plan for partial water replacement if calcium has climbed. Doing it before the surface starts scaling is maintenance. Doing it after is damage control.

  • Inspect steps, corners and fittings for the beginning of spider cracks.

  • Before the summer stretch, get the chemistry dialed in. A pool that enters July out of balance spends three months degrading.


What Not to Do to a Fiberglass Pool

These are the mistakes that create the repair jobs.

  • Never acid wash it. Acid washing is a plaster procedure. On gelcoat it strips the finish.

  • No wire brushes, stiff bristles or metal scrapers. They gouge the gelcoat, and those gouges become the entry point for water into the laminate underneath.

  • Avoid calcium hypochlorite shock. Cal hypo adds calcium to water that already has far too much of it. Liquid chlorine is the better choice in this market for exactly that reason.

  • Do not shock aggressively. Anything that pushes free chlorine past 5 ppm is working against the surface.

  • Never fully drain the pool yourself. Groundwater pressure against an empty shell can crack it or shift it out of position. Draining a fiberglass pool is a supervised procedure, not a weekend task.

  • Do not drag anything metal or sharp across the surface. Ladders, furniture, tools. A single scratch is a starting point.


The Early Warning Signs

Caught early, all of these are manageable. Left alone, they become resurfacing.

  • Chalky residue on your hand after touching the wall. This is oxidized gelcoat coming off. It means the surface has started breaking down, and it is the earliest sign you will get.

  • Color fading or going patchy. UV plus chemistry. Uniform fading is age. Patchy fading usually means chemistry.

  • The bottom feels rough or the steps feel slippery. Roughness is the finish eroding. Slickness on steps is a wear and safety issue, and it is one of the more common reasons owners call.

  • White crusty deposits at the waterline. Calcium scaling. This is the Las Vegas problem showing itself, and it is the point at which the water needs attention rather than the surface.

  • Thin web-like cracks on steps and corners. Spider cracks. Shallow ones are cosmetic. They are also an opening, and water getting into the laminate behind them is what produces blistering later.

  • Raised bubbles in the finish. Osmotic blistering, and the only item on this list that is not a maintenance issue. The laminate is holding water, and fixing it properly requires drying the shell out for a month or more before anything can be recoated.


When Maintenance Is No Longer the Answer

There is a point where better chemistry stops helping, because the damage is in the finish rather than in the water. The practical markers:

  • Chalking that returns within weeks of being cleaned off.

  • Discoloration that does not respond to cleaning, which usually means the calcium and pH combination has already done permanent work.

  • Roughness across a whole surface rather than in one spot.

  • Spot repairs that no longer blend, because the surrounding finish has faded away from the original color.

  • Any blistering.


At that stage the choice is resurfacing, and the good news is that it is a fraction of the cost of replacing the shell. A resurfaced fiberglass pool comes back to a smooth, sealed, uniform finish, and the maintenance routine above is what determines whether it stays that way for eight years or two.


Common Questions

What should calcium hardness be in a fiberglass pool?

Below 120 ppm. This is lower than the range recommended for plaster pools, because fiberglass does not need calcium in the water the way a plaster surface does. In Las Vegas this is the hardest number to hold, since tap water arrives between 205 and 428 ppm.


Why does my fiberglass pool keep getting calcium buildup in Las Vegas?

Because evaporation removes water and leaves minerals behind, and every top-up from the hose adds more. The honest answer is that the finish tells you before the calendar does: chalking, roughness and color loss are the signals.


Is a fiberglass pool harder to maintain than plaster?

In general it is easier. The surface is non-porous, it holds less algae and it needs fewer chemicals. The exception is calcium, where fiberglass wants a lower level than plaster does, and that is precisely the thing Las Vegas water makes difficult.
